Abstract:
The General Purpose Simulation system (GPSS) is a widely used simulation language. It has been developed over many years, principally by the IBM Corporation. First published in 1961 (1), it has evolved through several versions (2,3,4). It has been implemented on several different manufacturers' machines. GPSS/360 is described. SIMONE (5) is a PASCAL-based simulation language which incorporates latest concepts and techniques for process co-operation and synchronization. It identifies and draws a parallel between the salient features of GPSS and SIMONE. Facilities available in the two languages for use of resources, sequencing, event tracing, statistic collection etc. are described and compared. The last section shows that SIMONE is a far more efficient language than GPSS.
