Abstract:
Technical details regarding hydrology, hydraulic and structural design have been given of the main spillway of the Mangla Dam. The high discharge capacity required, difficult foundation condition and the planned future raising of the dam made it a challenging task and a rather unusual structure was evolved. The most uncommon features are submerged orfices controlled by high head radial gates and two stilling basins arranged in tandem designed to dissipate upto 38 million horse power of energy.
