Prevalence of gastrointestinal parasites in wild and domestic birds; investigating the three unexplored regions of district Dir (Upper) Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Pakistan

Abstract:
The class Aves is a diverse group of vertebrates having a worldwide distribution. More than 20000 species have been reported globally. Birds are prone to many types of gastrointestinal (GI) parasites and some of them can cause substantial effect to their population. The current study provides an insight on the prevalence and diversity of avian GI parasites in district Dir (Upper)Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Pakistan. A total of 400 birds representing 05 Orders, 16families and 22 species were sampled from three different sampling sites, Gandigar, Sheringal and Ushiri during September 2021 till September 2023. The qualitative examination of fecal samples taken from these birds was done using “Direct smear, Sedimentation and Floatation” techniques and slides were observed under microscope for the presence of GI parasites (eggs/adults). A general GI parasitic prevalence of 16.5% (66 samples) was observed in 02domestic and 03 wild bird species which was highest in domestic (12%) than thewild (4.5%) birds. Of the total 08 GI species identified 01 was from theprotozoan (Eimeria species) and 07 were from the helminthes (Trichuris{trichuris and vulpis}, Ascaris, Ascardia, Taxocara, Fasiola and Hymenolepis).Highest GI Parasitic prevalence was recorded in Gallus gallus domesticus(6.666%) followed by Columba livia (3.666%), Passer domesticus (1.666%),Acridotheres tristis (1.5%) and Passer montanus (1%). Highest degree of mixed infection was recorded in Gallus gallus domesticus which was infected by 06species of GI parasites followed by the moderate degree of mixed infections inColumba livia and Passer domesticus which were infected by 03 and 02 species, respectively. Acridotheres tristis and Passer montanus, on the other hand, has shown single infection pattern of the GI parasites.
