The effect of plant density on the bulb size and yield of onion.

Abstract:
A field trial to determine the effect of three plant densities-17, 22 and 33 plants/m2 on the bulb size and yield of onion, (Allium cepa L. ) was conducted at the Malir orchard of Sind Agriculture University, Tandojam, during the year 1982-83. The results indicated that the mean vertical, horizontal diameter and weight of bulb decreased, while the bulb yield/unit area increased with increase in plant density. The maximum yield of 28.6 t/ha was obtained at a plant density of 33 plants/m2, with a mean bulb weight of 85.8 g. The experimental results further indicated that the bulb yield/unit area could possibly be increased further by increasing the plant density beyond 33 plants/m2.
