Abstract:
Eighty five composite samples from 2550 individual F, segregating plants of the crops (B.B. Inia X HD 832) (Ciano "5"-Inia X Calidad) of bread wheat Triticum aestivum L. em Thell. were studied to determine the relationship of loaf volume and the end use of wheat with the several screening quality tests. Simple correlation coefficients were worked out for important combinations of six quality characters viz; (i) Pelshenke value, (ii) Index of gluten quality (iii) Sedimentation value, (iv) Specific sedimentation value, (v) Protein content, and (vi) Loaf volume. Important positive correlation coefficients were found between loaf volume and sedimentation value (+ 0.6976). Pelshenke value (+ 0.5651), specific sedimentation value (+ 0.5339), index of gluten quality (+ 0.5376) and protein content (+ 0.4193). The peishenke values were found to be highly correlated with index of gluten quality (+ 0.9697). Likewise sedimentation value was also significantly correlated with specific sedimentation value (+ 0.8128). In view of the high magnitude of correlation coefficients of loaf volume with sedimentation value and Pelshenke value, these two characters in early segregating generations would appear to be the most effective, efficient and economical tests in selection of good quality segregates of bread wheat.
