Abstract:
Conditions for the conversion of upgraded baryte into barium carbonate by reaction with an aqueous solution of sodium carbonate have been optimized. A maximum yield of 84% was achieved by stirring the reactant for 4 hours using a baryte soda ratio of I :4 at a temperature of 85°C. Attempts to separate sodium sulphate and unreacted sodium carbonate to recycle the same for the subsequent batches resulted in the formation of mixed crystals.
