Abstract:
Weed infestation is a major issue in wheat production around the world. Under field condition, various weed control methods including mechanical and manual weed control are being adapted with some limitations. Mechanical and manual weeding practices are costly, labor and time consuming practices and are not recommended for broadcast wheat. Chemical weed control is highly recommended due to less involvement of labor while consuming low costs. In this study, the possible post-emergence herbicides options were investigated for wheat crop. For that, a field experiment was carried out at the Agronomic Research Area, University of Agriculture Faisalabad where different postemergence weedicides i.e., mesosulfuron methyl + iodosulfuron at 15 g a.i. ha-1, mesosulfuron methyl + metasulfuron methyl + penoxadin at 50.62 g a.i. ha-1, mesosulfuron methyl + MCPA + sulfosulfuron at 264.84 g a.i. ha-1, metasulfuron methyl at 9.37 g a.i. ha-1, mesosulfuron methyl + carfentrazone ethyl + pinoxaden at 1225 g a.i. ha-1, carfentrazoneethyl + fluroxypyrmeptyl + florasulam at 109.2 g a.i. ha-1, fluroxpyr + MCPA at 375 g a.i. ha-1, sulfosulfuron at 25.5 g a.i. ha-1, and pinoxaden at 41.25 g a.i. ha-1 were included as experimental treatments which were replicated thrice under randomized complete block design. Data regarding weeds dynamics (density and dry biomass). The means values were compared by Tukey's HSD test at 5% probability level. The results demonstrated that herbicides application significantly affected all study traits. The minimum weed dry weight was recorded for weed free plots, but minimum weed dry weight was recorded from Atlantas super (13.14 g m-2). The minimum weed density was recorded from Starene (8 weeds m-2). Among herbicide treatments highest number of fertile tillers (331 m-2), spike length (10.86 cm), 1000-grain weight (40.03 g), grain yield (4.20 t ha-1), biological yield (8.56 t ha-1) and harvest index (49.83%) were recorded where Atlantas super was applied.
