Abstract:
The kind and number of insects inhabiting leaf litter and the lower soil layers upto 45 centimeter depth in Forest nursery, Botanical garden, Mango tree study area and Grassland revealed that the maximum number of diverse insects occur in the Forest nursery followed by Mango tree. The Botanical garden and Grassland apparently showed lesser diversity and fewer numbers of insects. Most insects occur in top 2.5 centimeter. In pterygotes, C one mbola was restricted to the top 2.5 centimeter whereas dipluran occurred in 1.5 centimeter. The third 1.5 centimeter layer had no insect specimens. The second layer in the category of pterygotes either had Hymenoptera (Formicidae) or some members of Coleopterous insects. The differential distribution in layers was regulated by sodium and potassium ion ratio, quantity of organic matter and the pH level.
