Abstract:
The power cables used for underground trans-mission and distribution of electrical power, have been widely using polymers as electrical insulation and are commercially designed upto 33 KV (XLPE). The polymers contribute an appreciable amount of power loss (heat) due to higher capacitance, permittivity and dielectric loss which depend upon the temperature and frequency. The different polymers possess different magnitudes of the parameters. The work described discusses technical aspects of the effect of these parameters on thermal degradation of cable insulation, a major ageing and breakdown process of a solid insulation.
