An experimental study on the synthesis and characterization of a coupling agent incorporated PVC-wood composite: Effects of PVC content.

Abstract:
A polyvinyl chloride-wood fibre thermoplastic composite was developed by incorporating a tri-component coupling agent for enhanced interfacial adhesion. Keeping the level of the coupling agent constant (2%), the mechanical and rheological properties of the composites were studied by varying PVC (or wood) component. The results showed that the composites had poor interfacial adhesion because of the large surface area of the wood fibres where the mechanical properties decreased by increasing the wood content. Similarly, the melt flow index (MFI) values increased by increasing the PVC content. However, the Fourier-Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectrum of the composite confirmed the presence of the coupling agent along with the strong cellulosic band of woof fibre.
