Abstract:
Development of incipient colonies of Coptotermes heimi (Wasmann) and Odontotermes obesus (Rambur) in blocks of different timbers was studied. As a result of field experiments on Odontotermes obesus, eleven types of timbers are arranged in descending order of preferences. Water loss of Odontotermes obesus and Coptotermes heimi at 34°C under 3% and 17% relative humidities was studied. In both the species workers in groups lost less weight than the single individuals. Survival of Coptotermes heimi and Odontotermes obesus at 34°C under different relative humidities (3%, 17%, 75%, 85% and 95%) was also studied. Coptotermes heimi showed greater tolerance to changes in humidity than Odontotermes obesus.
