Abstract:
Coastal marine sediments of Gaddani beach area near Karachi, a center of ship breaking industry in Pakistan have been analyzed for major, minor and trace elements. A wavelength dispersive- X-ray fluorescence Spectrometer was employed. Quyantitative analysis showed that samples contained Si, Ca, Fe, K and Ti as major and Br, Cu, Cr, Mn, Ni, P, Pb, Rb, Sr, Zn, are minor and trace elements. Accuracy of the method was checked by analyzing IAEA-SD-M2/TM, a marine sediment under the same experimental conditions. These results are in good agreement with IAEA certified values. Quantitative results of our samples have been compared with the results of sediments analyzed in other parts of the world and it was found that concentration of the elements like Cu, Fe, and Pb in our samples are comparable or less than the values reported in sediments from different parts of the world.
