Vitrectomy for the retained lens material after phacoemulsification | [Journal of College of Physicians and Surgeons--Pakistan : JCPSP • 2000]

Abstract:

A review of 23 cases of phacoemulsification, needing vitrectomy, to manage postoperative complications was done. The patients were recruited over a period of 30 months. The incidence of posterior dislocation of lens fragments in the region was 0.14%. The main indications for surgery were vitreal dislocation of the lens fragments 48%, secondary glaucoma 17%, lens material in anterior segment 9% and others in 26%. Vitrectomy was done within 7 days of the phacoemulsification in 70% of cases. The details of surgical technique are discussed. The 60% of cases had a visual acuity of 6/12 or better. Causes for poor visual outcome were Age Related Maculopathy (3), Myopic Maculopathy (1) and Cystoid Macular Oedema (4). Good results were attributed to performing adequate vitrectomy before using Perfluoro Carbon Liquids or Fragmatome.
