Abstract:
This study was undertaken to determine the effects of several pre and post emergence herbicides on weed control and maize yield. The experiments were laid out at Agricultural Research Institute, Tarnab during 1990. Weeds such as Echinochloa colonum, Digitaria sp, Dactyloctenium sp, Digeria sp. and Cyperus rotundus were the most prevalent species at the site. Pre-emergence herbicides, i.e. (metolachlor + atrazine, Pendimethal in and cyanazine + atrazine) were the most effective herbicides in decreasing weed population and increasing grain yield over weedy control. Atrazine as pre-emergence did not prove as effective as other pre-emergence herbicides. Dicamba + MCPA, DMA-6 and U 46-D proved less effective because of their specificity for broadleaf weed control, however, they were still better than unweeded control.
