Abstract:
Six faciolicidal and three organophosphorus compounds have been investigated for their inhibitory effect on the total cholinesterases of Fasciola hepatica and Fasciola gigantica. The results indicate that cholinesterase inhibition is not the primary mode of action of all the fasciolicidal compounds examined in the present study. Organophosphorus compounds, however, inhibited the cholinesterase of both Fasciola hepatica and Fasciola gigantica. Trichlorophon and coumaphos inhibited the cholinesterase activity by 100% at 10-5 M and 10-4 M concentrations respectively, while naphthalophos inhibited approximately 80% of the enzyme activity at the concentrations of 10-4 M in both Fasciola hepatica and Fasciola gigantica.
