Abstract:
The effects of soil extracts of soil samples collected from Khan Towel, Tanveer Garment, One Tech Ply Board and One Tech Rubber factories in the vicinity of Korangi and Landhi industrial sites were studied on seed germination and seedling growth of vegetables (Hibiscus esculentus L. and Cyamopsis tetragonoloba (L.) Taub.) and flowering plants (Zinnia elegans Jacq and Helianthus annuus L.) under homogeneous environment in a laboratory at the Department of Botany, University of Karachi. Soil extract of Khan Towel factory prominently suppressed seed germination, root, shoot and seedling length of H. annuus, seedling dry biomass of H. annuus and C. tetragonoloba in comparison to soil extract of Karachi University Campus. Shoot and seedling length of C. tetragonoloba and seed germination and seedling dry weight of Z. elegans were evidently inhibited in soil extract of Tanveer Garment factory. Soil extract of One Tech Ply Board factory greatly reduced seed germination, root length and shoot length of H. esculentus, C. tetragonoloba and Z. elegans, respectively, than did the Karachi University soil. Seed germination of C. tetragonoloba and root and seedling length of Z. elegans were considerably inhibited in One Tech Rubber factory soil extract as compared to University soil extract.
