Abstract:
14 C labelled glucose, sucrose and CO gas were used to study carbon absorption by roots of rice plants, effect of nitrogen levels on the absorption by roots, of rice plants, effect of nitrogen levels on the absorption of carbon, downward movement of absorbed carbon and light effect on absorbed carbon and its release, with a view to explain the importance of nitrogen levels in the chlorophyll for photosynthesis. The results show that downward movement of C is faster when absorbed as gas by leaves than when taken up as liquid by roots, nitrogen deficiency reduces 14C absorption from gas and solution, and older roots retain absorbed 14C better than younger roots and translocate it to aerial parts quicker.
