Abstract:
Al breeding in dairy cattle has considerably increased the possibilities of genetic improvement. Population size or, more precisely, the size of the active population (cow under official milk recording and Al) determines to what extent a progeny testing scheme can be expanded within a particular breed in a particular country. Genetic improvement increases with increasing population size. But genetic gain does not increase linearly for increasing population size and/or numbers of young bulls tested.
