Abstract:
The food security issues of a country are related to the population growth, the natural resources including non renewable (Soil and minerals) and renewable (water and Forest) besides industries and share in the world trade and job market within the country. Rapid population growth increases the demand for housing, sanitations, health and education facilities and of course food. All these requirements are met at the cost of over exploiting the fixed natural none renewable resource “the soil”. Most of the productive land is either converted to non productive use like construction of houses, expanding cities, schools, hospitals, industries and roads reducing the food production or over exploiting soil for more agriculture product reducing its production potential. Over exploitation of soils for food production to meet the demand of growing population make soil vulnerable to problems like erosion, lower soil fertility salinity and water logging. Climate Change is a threat never witnessed before by mankind and has been realized by the communities at large. Threats to food supplies and the sustainability of agriculture are at the forefront of the predicted impacts of Climate Change. Changes in rainfall pattern as well as intensity, rising temperatures, melting of glaciers, shifting seasons and more frequent events (of flood and drought) combined with rapidly growing population are posing threats to agriculture in Pakistan, thereby, threatening country food security. In Pakistan, unfortunately there is no policy or realization at large to plan for controlling exploding rates of population growth that is converting major chunk of prime agriculture land into villages, towns, and housing societies. If the population growth continues to take place at the same rate than in couple of years, Pakistan will turn into a food insecure country keeping in view the present agriculture production trends. Rapid climate changes in Pakistan and elsewhere are now translating in shape of extreme and frequent weather events like, drought, heat waves and floods and the effects are reflected on agriculture at large. Thus, poverty, hunger, agriculture production technologies, desertification, people migration for adaptation and climate changes issues needs to be addressed collectively.
