Abstract:
Portulaca oleracea Linn. is a weed of cultivation in Pakistan. Laboratory studies revealed that aqueous extracts from dry and fresh shoots rain leachates mulch, and litter invariably reduced either germination. early growth or both of Setaria italica, Pennisetum americanum, Zea mays cv sarhad-white; and cv sarhad-yellow and Triticum aestivum in various experiments. The moisture and chlorophyll contents of seedlings increased under test conditions. The corn cv Sarhad- yellow was more susceptible than corn cv Sarhad -white showing varietal response. Caffeic, chlorogenic, ferulic, ellagic, p-OH-Benzoic and p-coumaric acids were identified with paper, thin layer and gas liquid chromatography. The findings suggest that it might reduce the productivity of associated species owing to its strong allelopathic potential.
