Abstract:
Twenty-nine species of planktonic, epioikotic and edaphic blue-green algae have been collected from various freshwater habitats in Rabwah and Sargodha cities of the Punjab Province, Pakistan during February to November 1994. They were taxonomically investigated and found to belong to two classes, three orders, four families and 16 genera. Members of the class Nostocophyceae with 18 species were found to be more prevalent than those of Chroocophyceae with I I species. Oscillatoria with 7 species was the most commonly occurring genus. Arthrospira, Aulosira, Cylindrospermum, Gloeocapsa, Gloeothece, Hapalosiphon, Microcoleus, Nostoc and Spirulina were represented by a single species. Anabaena, Aphanocapsa, Aphanothece, Lyngbya and Merismopedia by two and Chroococcus by three species. Heterotichous species were only scarcely observed. The algae were most abundant in the planktonic condition than in other states.
