Abstract:
The performance of a two-stage sand filtration process in the treatment of the secondary effluent was studied in a pilot plant at filtration rate of 150 m3 m-2 d. The two-stage sand filtration process exhibited the removal efficiencies of 89%, 78% and 84% for TSS, BOD5 and COD, respectively. Also the average efficiencies of the filtration process in the removal of NO2 -, NO3 -, TDS and TP were determined to be 34%, 21%, 11% and 28%, respectively. Data indicated that the two-stage sand filtration process play an essential role in the improvement of effluent quality. A simple and readily available technology satisfied effluent quality requirements for agricultural reuse especially from viewpoint of suspended solids and organic matter.
