Abstract:
With the passage of time, the planet Earth has been experiencing drastic changes ranging from climatic to evolutionary variations. Hence, it is the ultimate requirement to get some alternative and sustainable sources to overcome major challenges like hunger, lethal diseases, shortage of renewable energy sources, climatic changes, greenhouse gases, pollution, seasonal variations, land areascarcityetc. Being an ideal organism, algae have large spectrum of possible applications ranging from nutritional properties to sustainable source of renewable energy and biofuel as they act as well organized, systematic and methodological biological system to harvest light and are considered as efficient system for organic compound production. Global algal market has been facing a new provocation of algal growth on commercial scale without any damage to natural environment. In the present study, Microalgal flora of three areas Jhelum, QAU and Lake Khabbaki were assessed to explore diversity of algal species using various culturing techniques. Different species of algae were investigated through microscopic observations onthe basis of characteristics such as cell shape, size, chloroplast shape, presence or absence ofpyrenoid and its number within chloroplast, presence or absence of cell wall ornamentationsand presence of unique features like flagella, barite vacuole etc. Identification of algal strains were done by morphological analysis and overall, eighty-five species were recorded. The investigated species were belonged to 41 genera, 33 families, 21 order and 6 divisions. Among these twelve species were assigned to phylum Cyanophyta, fifteen species to Volvophyta, five to Euglenophyta, eighteen to Bacillariophyta and thirty-five species to phylum Chlorophyta were investigated.
