Abstract:
In chronic renal insufficiency, atherosclerosis is a major problem that to a great extent determines the prognosis of chronic uraemic patients, either dialyzed or not. Several hypotheses have been put forward to explain the development of atherosclerosis in chronic renal insufficiency. Severe hyperhomocysteinemia was significantly associated with vascular disease in dialysis patients, supporting the view that homocysteine (Hcy) may add to the increased prevalence of progressive vascular disease in chronic uraemic patients. A significant positive relation was found between plasma creatinine and Hcy concentrations and a significant negative correlation between creatinine clearance and plasma homocysteine. The present study was carried out to see the predialysis levels of homocysteine in end stage renal disease (ESRD) patients of Shaikh Zayed Hospital Lahore receiving regular haemodialysis. Fifty ESRD patients on haemodialysis and 20 healthy control subjects matched for age and sex were included in the study. A highly significant (P
