Abstract:
Investigations were carried out to stabilize saline and other soils of different areas of Pakistan for building low-cost rural roads and plastering of mud houses using inorganic binders, setting-time modifiers and additives. The optimum ratios of the raw materials i.e. sodium silicate, gypsum, soil and sand are reported and the physical properties of soil-stabilized blocks made from a variety of compositions were studied. For compressive strength, water resistance, efflorescence, surface hardness, contraction, etc. It was found that soil 1 part, calcined gypsum 0.04 parts and 0.3 parts Aq. Sodium silicate (40%) containing (1%) time modifier when mixed and molded as such and in presence of additives i.e. sand and gravel etc. gave water resistant products, of desired characteristics. The compressive strength of the dried compositions ranged from 1200-150 0 p.s.i. The product was used for building a road strip and also applied for plastering of mud walls. The results obtained were encouraging. The road was in good condition even after two years use under prevailing extreme weather conditions in that region.
