Aluminium amalgam - a general reducing agent.

Abstract:
The effectiveness (or otherwise) of aluminium—acid reagent to reduce a variety of functional groups is investigated. Aluminum was used as powder and the acid was hydrochloric. As the powder is light and unwettable due to a deli-berate coating of the oil, it is degreased and amalgamated in pretreatment prior to its use in a reduction reaction.
