Abstract:
A new direct shear testing device was developed. The device is inserted between the platens of the standard testing machine and a rock specimen is placed in the device. Compressive load applied by the testing machine forces the specimen to shear along a predetermined plane. By shearing a number of specimens at various angles, the shear strength of rocks can be determined. The device was tested and calibrated using uniform sandstone specimens. The device has the potential to provide shear strength information on a timely and economical basis.
