Abstract:
Fishes of the family Mugilidae are commonly known as Mullets and are distributed in all tropical and temperate seas. These species are accountable as a good seafood source among the other Chondrichthyes seafood fishes. They live in the form of schools and mainly feed on algae and diatoms. In this study, the monthly distribution and seasonal size variation of a Mullet species, Planiliza subviridis was investigated. The samples of P. subviridis were collected from Sonmiani Bay, Balochistan during March 2005 to May 2007. The Beach seine and gill net were used to capture the fish. The highest numbers of specimens were observed during December 2005 while the lowest numbers of specimens were seen during the SW monsoon period. Present work provides information regarding the seasonal distribution and habitat suitability including abundance of P. subviridis from Sonmiani Bay, Balochistan which will be helpful to assess fish distribution in a particular time or area.
