Abstract:
In order to display hybrid vigour in sorghums 4 promising indigenous jowar selections viz: 263, 893, 100 and 193 were crossed with three testers i.e., male sterile sorghum 1635, 1616 and 1617 in all possible combinations. The crosses between indigenous sorghums and male sterile sorghums for the production of Fl seed of sorghum hybrid were accomplished in the crop sown in July 1962. The Fl seeds thus obtained were sown in 1963, alongwith the parents. The data with regard to the various plant characters namely, air dry weight per plant, height of the main-shoot, tillers, number of leaves, leaf area per plant and days taken by the crop to mature for forage were recorded. The crop remained under close observation throughout the growing period. The hybrids in all possible combinations were found to be quick growing, early maturing, multitillering and having more leaves with maximum leaf-area and capable of yielding a huge tonnage of forage as compared with the parents. Jowar No. 263 exhibited the best combining ability with the male sterile sorghums and the hybrid 1616 x 263 lead in yield and gave more of forage tonnage than jowar 263 the high yielding parent. The combining ability of jowar100 was second in order of merit while, jowar 893 and 193 ranked 3rd and 4th in position.
