Abstract:
Details of intra-cellular histology were studied with the Transmission Electron Microscopic (TEM) method of the distal canine airways from the small bronchiole to the alveolar wall of 4 clinically normal 14-18 weeks old Collie cross dogs. Ciliated columnar cells were found along with Goblet cells having occasional 'Basal' cells sandwiched between ciliated and very few Epithelial serous cells in the larger bronchioles. The situation was found to be different in medium-sized, small and terminal bronchioles, where non-ciliated cells (Clara) dominated over the ciliated cells, whose number of cilia per cell was much less. None of the Goblet or serous cell was found in these regions. Clara cells showed a uniform morphology in all of the regions. Unlike SEM studies alveolar macrophages were found. Histological details and observation of alveolar macrophages in the TEM as compared to that of SEM had been discussed.
