Abstract:

This study presents the toxic effects of lead (Pb) on blue-green algae. It was observed that lead inhibits the growth of Microcystis aeraginosa Kutzing emend. Elenkin (Chroocophyceae Shameel) and Anabaena sphaerica Bornet et Flahault (Nostocophyceae Shameel, Cyanophyta). The zone of inhibition is observed to be directly proportional to the concentration of lead and a toxicity factor k has been deduced showing that former was more susceptible to Pb than the latter.
