Abstract:
The species selected for the purpose of investigation are Deodar, Fir, Banspata, Toon, Kadam, Chatin, Pitraj and Gewa. Fir, Toon and Pitraj did not machine well in small sections. The remaining five species were tested for hardness according to ASTM procedure. These were compared with incense cedar for hardness, and chemically treated for a suitable hardness and for improving machine cutting properties. Treatment conditions employed with pencil slats are tabulated. Results of average hardness values indicate that pencils made from ated Deodar and Banspata were of high quality. Extensive cultivation of Banspata in East Pakistan is recommended.
