Abstract:
The study presents the basic data on the length-weight relationship as well as the correlations between the various body parameters (length, weight. condition factor) and body constituents (dry matter, crude protein. fat. ash and gross energy) for Oreochromis niloticus at various growth stages. The results indicated a highly significant correlation coefficient (r = 0.994) between the length (L) and weight (W) and the calculated value for regression equation was Log W -1.30 2.75 Log L. The second degree polynomial regression equation was W 17.5-7.03 L -i- 0.829 L2. Significant differences were observed in the carcass composition of fish for various length groups. With the exception of one length group (4.1 - 5 cm) the dry matter content of fish increased as the length and weight increased. Although the percentage crude protein values showed a decreasing trend with the increase in the length of fish, the results were non significant. Both the percentage tat and ash contents of fish increased significantly with increase in length and weight of fish. No significant differences were, however, observed in the overall gross energy value in various length groups of fish. The dry matter, fat and ash contents of fish showed highly significant positive correlations within each other as well as with the length and weight. The gross energy values of fish were also positively correlated with the percentage fat and protein contents. However, the crude protein content did not show any significant correlation with the weight, dry matter, fat and ash contents of fish.
