Abstract:
The university-industry interaction in chemistry and allied fields, though by no means negligible, is still in its infancy in Pakistan. Its growth is partly hampered by the non-participation of foreign-owned subsidiaries and the continuing transfer of technology from abroad on a `turn-key` basis. The absence of large research schools near industrial centres further contributes to slow growth. Active encouragement of research and development, greater recognition of efforts to develop indigenous technology and the introduction of the importance of research (publish or perish) for students and faculty by various means and the mandatory association of university staff with projects based on imported technology could go a long way in promoting the cause of university-industry interaction which would obviously benefit both.
