Abstract:
The Properties of the household, industrial and commercial wastes are discussed. The refuse incineration chambers for combustion of these wastes at high temperatures and pressures are described. Utilization of bye-products of refuse incineration and other economic aspects are discussed. Garbage based Thermal Power Stations have a potential of about 1000 MWs in Pakistan, generating five billion additional Units of electricity per annum. In some areas, waste from crops, such as Sugar-cane and Cotton can be used. 85% to 90% of these waste materials are combustible. The remaining 10 to 15% slag can be dumped without violating hygienic standards or even put to further use as construction material. The heat produced by combustion at high temperature and pressure can be utilized for raising steam which is used to run a turbine. With the steam turbine an electrical generator is driven.
