Abstract:
The composition of major nutrients, amino acid profile and mineral content of wheat and rice brans, maize gluten, toria and peanut cakes, and sugar meal were determined to assess their nutritional role in poultry and cattle feed. Wheat and rice brans contained 12.8 and 8.5% crude protein, respectively as compared to 23.2 to 38.6% in other by-products. Guar. meal and wheat bran were the richests source of energy while peanut cake the poorest. However, the latter was the best source of iron. Calcium: phosphorus ratio of all the by-products except guar meal was less than one. The cereal by- products were deficient in lysine and threonine, while the legume by-products were lacking in S-containing amino acids and threonine. Toria meal was deficient in cystine and isolecuine. It was concluded that both wheat and rice brans can serve as supplemental sources of energy, while other by-products as protein supplements. Detoxification of the protein supplements may improve their nutritive value. Mixture of the various by-products in animal feed has been suggested to balance nutrient deficiencies.
