Abstract:
The study was aimed at assessing the effectiveness of chemical herbicides against hand weeding in two experimental fields viz., less and high weed infested. Coronopus didymus was most prominent in the former while grasses and Chenopodium album were the most frequent weed in the latter fields. In the less weed-infested fields Dicuran MA, Dosanex and Arelon gave 80.5, 82.6 and 78.5 percent control of both board and narrow-leaved weeds, respectively, while Dicuran MA, Dosanex and Tribunil gave 92.0, 90.4 and 85.5 percent control, respectively, in high weed- infested fields when the crop was near harvesting. However, no chemical, 'permanently controlled Convolvulus and Banvel only killed broad-leaved weeds. In high weed infested fields, chemical herbicides increased the yield but there was no difference between chemical or hand-weeding methods.
