Abstract:
The ultrastructure of the chromatophores on the functionally 'dorsal' skin of the plaice Pleuronectes platessa is described. The presence of the leucophores in the fish is reported for the first time. The chromatphores of the 'dorsal' skin include the melanophores iridophores, leucophores, erythrophores and xanthophores. The leucophores respond degeneratively to melamine-saturated water. The erythrophores contain pterinosomes with five distinctly different development stages.
