Abstract:
Changing climatic conditions are an alarming threat for availability of food for growing population. Crops areunder the threat of climatic changes and there is reduction in productivity and deterioration in quality. Adaptation strategies are required to mitigate the climatic effects on food cropsto sustain the production and improve the quality as well as availability of food to the growing population in Pakistan. There are different methods for the improvement to preserve the crop production and quality yield. Conventional plant breeding techniques and conventional methods for plant protection are not sufficient to introduce new and improved varieties to perform well in adverse weather conditions. Plant metabolic pathways are required to be studied at genomics and proteomics level which may proceed the scientists to unravel the mysteries of crop plants' performance under present scenario of global warming. Plant genomics and proteomics approaches along with integrated molecular breeding approaches are making progress to improve the plant protection and production strategies. Now scientists are focusing to use the performance of these technologies to identify and characterize the differential expression of genes under severe environments. The modifications to these genes will help out the plants to perform better in the extreme climate. These approaches with improved technologies may find the solution to identify the new genes to be allowed to introduce new crop varieties which mayhave sustainable performance in the severe environments and produce higher yield and improved quality of food with good nutritional value.
