Abstract:
The experiment was laid out in RCB design using 10 varieties sown during November, 1992 in different ecological zones of NWFP by following uniform cultural practice. Two high yielding environments (Peshawar and Swat) and one low (D.I.Khan) were chosen to test the agronomic effectiveness of wheat cultivars for their adaptability and stability. Yield co-efficients and co-efficient of effectiveness or the harvest index which is an expression of the final result of a certain variety under a given set of environmental conditions, were at variance at different locations due to the natural and genetic cultivar make-up and environment-cultivar interaction under particular climatic conditions. It was documented from the study that the yield co-efficients had positive correlation with grain yields and that the harvest indices obtained in one location had no predictable relationship to grain yield in the other site. The adaptability results of the present investigation were generally argued on the basis of seed yield ranking and stability parameters. The stability analysis showed an interesting approach towards adaptability of certain varieties in a particular environment. Variety Chenab-79 not only produced higher mean seed yield across the locations but was considered the stable variety having 0.80 bi. This was followed by Pak-81 and Pirsabak-91 with 0.97 and 0.86 bi respectively. Furthermore, a significant linear trend was found between the varietal yield and environmental mean yields of the above stable varieties.
