Abstract:
An electronic bibliographic search from the year 1990 to June 2014 was performed on MEDLINE, the Cochrane Controlled Trials Register, the Cochrane Library, and EMBASE databases. Other than computer search, manual search for reference was also done from all available primary studies, review articles and books to find other studies not found during the computer search. Key words “acute, appendicitis, appendicectomy, antibiotic and conservative treatment” were used to retrieve the data. Eligible articles were those comparing surgery (either open or laparoscopic) with antibiotic/conservative treatment in patients with acute appendicitis, regardless of the publication status, place of study or language. All observational studies, cases series, case-control studies and non- RCTs were excluded.
