Abstract:
The study aims to analyze the disbursement of micro credit programme by Sarhad Rural Support Programme for womenfolk through Women Community Organizations. Data were collected from 210 respondents from three purposely-selected union councils in District Peshawar. The findings of the study show that SRSP distributed the micro credit for those developmental activities that directly address the needs of the people. To enhance the income of rural women two levels Rs. 5000 to 10000 (level I) and Rs. 18000 to 20000 (level 2) of credit were provided to communities for different economic activities. The credit was mostly utilized for the purchase of livestock and enterprise development. The income effect of level 2 credit and level I was almost similar The income effect of enterprises and that of livestock was not statistically significant. The major effect of the SRSP on gender related economic activities were the contribution of women in total household income. The study showed not very encouraging results regarding increase in monthly income of the sample respondents after the interventions of SRSP. However the slight increase in monthly income of the sample respondents resulted in an increase in spending mainly on education and health. This increase in household income made them more confident in decision-making. The problem of inadequate amount of credit and lack of marketing facilities were found in the study area. The provision of such facilities will ensure rural women`s empowerment at one hand and poverty alleviation on other.
