Abstract:
Fascioliasis is a common problem in livestock in Karachi. There are two species namely Fasciola hepatica and Fasciola gigantica which are found in sheep, goat and cattle. F. gigantica is common in cattle in Karachi. A survey was conducted to collect data for incidence of infection in cattle in Karachi during February 1984 to July 1985. Examination of liver of 5919 slaughtered animals in Karachi including buffalo, bull cow and ox, revealed that a total of 8.49% of animals were infected with one or both species of Fasciola. The infection rate was 8.61% in buffaloes, 8.96% in bulls. 7.48% in cows and 8.49% in oxes. The highest worm burden was in buffalo, 316 F. gigantica were recovered from a single buffalo. Relatively highest percentage of infection was observed in February 1984 (11.39%), and in March 1984 (13.04%). Gross pathological changes were also observed.
