Abstract:
The field boundaries have a reducing effect on the net crop area under any crop and the crop at the boundaries is different from the rest of the field. Wheat crop is poorer at the boundaries of the field and this tends to diminish the net yield rate. At the time of harvest the moisture content in wheat crop grown at the border is significantly higher than that in the rest of the field. This further magnifies the adverse effect of field boundaries on the gross yield rate. The effect of field boundaries was tentatively taken to be 3.3 ft. deep, although it may be more. It is definitely much more in small sized and unirrigated fields. Extensive studies of mountainous, sub mountainous and unirrigated tracts will most probably reveal a high percentage of adverse marginal effect on gross yield rates.
