Abstract:
Decarburization is a harmful phenomenon commonly encountered in steel during its heating for hot rolling, forging, extruding, spinning and fabrication or in other steel products such as bar, wire, strip, and similarly in heat treatment. It is a diffusion-based phenomenon and extent of it depends on (1). Temperature of heating. (2). Time of heating. (3). Composition of the steel being treated. & (4). Composition of the surrounding medium. The present activity is to calculate the effect of temperature on decarburization depth during heat treatment of high strength low alloy steel by making other factors constant. A short temperature range is selected for subject investigation so as to make the activity of the atmosphere near uniform throughout the experimentation.
