Abstract:
Accurate measurements of flow activation energy En are reported for concentrated aqueous ethanol solutions containing 86 to 68% ethanol by weight, and show the presence of the cyclic undulations described previously. In combination with previous data, these new measurements yield charts for the sequence of movement of the maxima and minima of E with ethanol concentration, which show several branching occurring at ethanol concentrations of 95, 86 and 63%+5% approximately. It is found that the variations in En change from a cyclic to a stepwise behavior in die region between 68 and 58% ethanol concentration, and the foregoing observations lead to the view that probably two basically distinct types of structural arrangements exist stably in different concentrated ethanol solutions, namely(i) a configuration consisting of 3 ethanol molecules linked with 2 water molecules on the average, and (ii) a configuration of 3 to 5 ethanol molecules linked to one water molecule. Further investigations are in hand.
