Abstract:
Peach (Prunus persica L.) member of family Rosaceae, widely grown in temperate regions of Pakistan. Being economically and nutritionally important fruit, it is rich source of organic acids, dietary fibers and carbohydrates. Peach fruits have laxative properties and are appropriate to prevent constipation and for the treatment of duodenum ulcers. Peach cultivation in Pakistan is about 15,800 ha with production of 87, 700 tons. Major contributor of Peach production is Khyber Pakhtunkhwa where it covers 6,200 ha with annual production of 57,800 tons. This important plant yields low due to the attack of certain diseases and insect. During biotrophic fungal pathogenic survey conducted in District Abbottabad, Infected Prunus persica plants were collected and identified using morpho-anatomical and molecular markers. The causal agent is identified as Erysiphe prunastri var. prunatsri. Identity of fungus was confirmed by analyzing genetic variation of Internal Transcribed Spacer region of nrDNA. To our knowledge, it is the first report of this fungus on P. persica from Pakistan.
