Abstract:
p53 is a tumor suppressorgene located on chromosome 17p13.1. Its function includes cell cycle controland apoptosis. Loss of p53 function, eitherdue to decreasedlevel or genetic transformation,is associated with loss of ceil cycle control, decrease apoptosis and genomic modification. Such mutation of p53 gene is now assessed as the indicatorof neoplasia orcancerof severalorgansand cell types. p53 has demonstratedto have criticalrolein defining variousprogressivestages of neoplasia, therapeuticstrategiesand clinical application. The present reviewbrieflydescribesfunction of p53 in addition to its diagnostic and prognosticsignificance in detecting severaltypes of neoplasia.
