Abstract:
A study was conducted on 1200 cattle and 1050 buffaloes slaughtered at Lahore abattoirs to record the incidence and pathology of onchocerciasis caused by Onchocerca armilata and Onchocerca gutturosa. The overall rate of infection was recorded as 92% in cattle and 2% in buffaloes respectively. The relative distributions of lesions of Onchocerciasis in different organs, gross and microscopic changes were also recorded. The lesions were only observed in aorta of infected cattle and buffaloes and were absent in ligament nuchae and rumeno-splenic areas. Lesions in aorta consisted of focal nodular thickening of intimae and adbentitia resulting in tortuous tunnels, calcified plaques and occasional ulceration.
