Abstract:
Seventy-five cases of acute myocardial infarction wereadmitted to the coronary unit. 85% were males and 15% females. The average age of the male patients was 52 years while that of the female patients was 54 years. The most common complaints were pain in the chest (96%), sweating (78%) and shortness of breath (24%). On admission hypertension was present in 21% while 29% were in cardiac failure. Dysarrythmia was detected in 15 of the cases. Serum cholesterol was > 250 mg/100 ml in 66.2% of the cases while the fasting blood sugar was > 120 mg/100 ml in 27.4% of the patients. The mortality was 8% with sudden cardiac arrest and ventricular fibrillation as the common causes of death.
